With street protests, legal actions and even some violent skirmishes, a thousands-strong group of villagers, lawyers and environmentalists has delayed the Treno Alta Velocita rail project, or TAV, as it's known here, for two decades. In the process they've left Italy's northwest bereft of a key source of international trade and jobs. (Read the article)

Fashionista alert: Target has released the lookbook for its upcoming Missoni capsule collection, and based on the images, the line offers plenty of the Italian luxury label's signature zigzag prints. The wallet-friendly collection, which will be available Sept. 13 through Oct. 22, 2011, features apparel and accessories for women, men, girls and babies, as well as home furnishings. THE TELEGRAPH. They may have a reputation for living 'la dolce vita' but life is no picnic for Italian women, who are the unhappiest in Europe, according to a new survey. They are worried about the economic crisis, the difficulty of re-entering the work market after having children and the dearth of child care centers. (Read the article)

GOTHAMIST. Maria Carmela Farina, who speaks almost no English, claims that she moved from Venice to the States to work in Bastianich's kitchens but instead found herself spending the last six years essentially as an indentured servant for a 99-year-old Queens woman. (Read the article)

ANSA. According to the Civil Protection Department, 11 cities are expected to be hit by rising temperatures from Bolzano and Bologna, Perugia in the center and Latina, south of Rome. Those most at risk from high temperatures include the elderly, in particular those older than 65 years of age with chronic illness, children less four years old and diabetics. (Read the article)

ANSA. Italy is sending 30 tonnes of emergency aid to Africa to help deal with the crisis in the sub-Saharan region stricken by drought and famine. The aid consists of necessities including tents, containers for drinking water, electricity generators, blankets and cooking utensils. (Read the article)

BAM.ORG. BAMcinématek salutes the visionary independent film distribution company Magnolia Picture on its 10th anniversary with a retrospective. On August 26, at 4.30 and 9.40, there will be screenings of I am Love, Luca Guadagnino’s elegant, modern masterwork that harks back to the heyday of Visconti in its lush visual design and unabashed romanticism.

ST. LOUIS DAILY. Giuseppe Faresin, a 57-year-old Italian national, had just finished kayaking from Minneapolis to the steps of the Gateway Arch. His trip down the Mississippi River spanned 900 miles - 1,400 kilometers - and took him about three weeks. (Read the article)

The popular courtroom drama is filming an episode that bears a striking resemblance to the Strauss-Kahn scandal and ensuing media storm surrounding the former International Monetary Fund chief. ANSA. Minister Calderoli said Serie A soccer players should pay a new solidarity tax on high incomes that is part of the government's austerity package twice. He added that the players are ''spoiled'' and should be subject to the higher tax rate set to be applied to MPs if they continue to threaten to strike over a contract wrangle. (Read the article)
