The damage from August's devastating earthquake in central Italy will amount to at least three to four billion euros, Civil Protection Fabrizio Curcio told a press conference a month after the disaster killed 297 people.

The heart of St. Padre Pio will be on display in Massachusetts this week, marking the first time the religious relic has ever left its home in Italy.

The seven Italian films bidding to become Italy's contender to make the list of Oscar foreign-film candidates were unveiled by film industry association ANICA Friday. A selection committee will meet on Monday September 26 to choose the candidate, ANICA said.

Pope Francis met with war refugees and religious figures on Tuesday in Assisi, the Italian hometown of the tolerance-preaching St. Francis, for a day of prayers for peace, openness toward refugees and calls for religions to marginalize fundamentalism.

The rescuers worked tirelessly under a scorching sun. Wearing white masks to fight off the dust, they formed a human chain, passing from hand to hand all they could salvage from the gravelly destruction of the earthquake that struck this region in August. They had to work quickly, fearing the precariousness of an adjacent building splintered by wide fissures.

Italian Premier Matteo Renzi arrived on Monday in New York, where he is set to take part in the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Later on Monday he will participate in a debate organized by the Clinton Global Initiative and moderated by former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

The throne has arrived. The long-planned participatory (shall we say) sculpture by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan — a fully functional, solid 18-karat-gold copy of a Kohler toilet, an over-the-top apotheosis of wealth — was installed in the humble restroom on the fifth-floor ramp of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum late last week and will be open for business to anyone with the urge on Friday.

Francis Ford Coppola may have created the “Godfather” films, but these days, the real godfather of the Coppola clan is his uncle Anton Coppola.
“I don’t know if I like the Mafioso connotations of that,” said Mr. Coppola, who is 99 and still composing, conducting and devoting his life to opera. He is also uncle to the actress Talia Shire, and great-uncle to the actors Nicolas Cage and Jason and Robert Schwartzman, and the filmmakers Sofia and Roman Coppola.

The legendary pop-jazz crooner, born Anthony Benedetto in New York City, burst onto the music scene in 1951 with two chart-topping hits, "Because of You" and a cover of Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart." He went on to score more than 30 Top 40 singles by 1965.

The 57-year-old Evita actress was fresh-faced as she was spotted flying away in a private jet from Brindisi airport in a chic monochrome ensemble.
