A 6.1 magnitude earthquake and series of aftershocks rattled Emilia Romagna on May 20, 2012, killing 29 and leaving almost 15,000 people homeless. The quake damaged churches and historic buildings, affected farms and factories at the heart of Italy's food production supply, and took a devastating emotional toll on those living in and around the quake area.

LONDON -- Oscar winning director and screenwriter Bernardo Bertolucci will serve as its guest artistic director at AFI Fest 2012, the American Film Institute said.

MANHATTAN — Flatiron food mecca Eataly is uniting chefs from Italy and the Big Apple for the third annual IDENTITA' New York, an event celebrating top-notch Italian food and wine.

A popular dish at old-guard Italian-American restaurants in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens is mozzarella in carrozza, which means "mozzarella in a carriage." It consists of two pieces of bread with cheese in between, which is dipped in batter and then deep fried, making one of the richest toasted cheese sandwiches the world has ever seen.

Throughout his long career the conductor Riccardo Muti has proved himself expert at revealing subtleties in pieces that on the surface may seem musically obvious. He did this thrillingly on Wednesday night, when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra opened the Carnagie Hall season with a stunning performance of Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” Mr. Muti treated that pummeling, elemental score with respect and brought out great tenderness in the music that most accounts miss.

NEW YORK — The Columbus Day Parade has Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue awash in red, white and green.
Monday’s parade includes a float bearing a giant head of Christopher Columbus.
Police officers are wearing sashes of red, white and green, and thousands of people are waving Italian flags and cheering from the sidewalks.

The eighth richest man in Europe was once an orphan.
Leonardo Del Vecchio, the founder and chairman of Italian eyewear maker Luxottica, was born to a mother who could not afford to care for him. At the age of seven, Del Vecchio, whose father died five months before his birth, lived under the care of nuns in an ophanage.

PARMA, Italy, Oct 8 (Reuters) - World leading pasta-maker Barilla is defying Italy's recession by opening a 40-million-euro ($52 million) plant near its Parma home base, just as other big industrial names are pulling out of the country or freezing investments.

REGGIO CALABRIA, Italy — Italy’s A3 highway, begun in the 1960s and still not finished, starts outside Naples in the ancient hill town of Salerno and ends, rather unceremoniously, 300 miles farther south as a local street in downtown Reggio Calabria.

Dolce & Gabbana has helped to restore visionary film Fellini Satyricon, originally directed by the legendary Federico Fellini - who is also known for creating La Dolce Vita. The celebrated Italian fantasy-drama - first released in 1969 and scooping four prestigious Silver Ribbon awards - was described by Fellini as "science-fiction from the past". It will open New York Film Festival on October 13.
